Adopted by the US Army in 1903 the Springfield rifle was based on the German Mauser design. It utilized a 5 round stripper clip that inserted into an integril magizine from the top. As a bolt-action rifle reach round had to be cycled manually.

It was known to be favored by the United states marine corps during early World War 2 the marines turned down the M1 garand and remain using the Springfield. Later they adopted the new M1 because it had the capability of more firepower which was better suited for the Pacifics jungle warfare.
